The first time I saw this line, about five years ago, I was struggling to learn how to climb, but this line took my attention first look, I "needed" to climb it, let's look for the guide and see which grade it is... OK, 7b, may be I'll climb it in another life, or so I thought. That grade seemed too far away, at the time I was barely climbing some 6a/+'s, not too many.

I think I've already told you that I really like skiing, since that first time I went to Las Leñas, Mendoza, with my father, something like 25 years ago. The ski center is very nice, but when I discovered ski mountaineering, where you are no longer limited to the ski pistes, you can ski wherever you want, I think at that point I became a ski fanatic, mainly because I also enjoy the way up, as much as the down.
So when I moved to Bariloche, I made a couple of courses to learn the basics about ski mountaineering and avalanches, and now it's just time to go out skiing. But well, it's not so easy, you need to find some partners, and then, where do we go skiing? And that was the part I couldn't yet understand: where we may start? A ski mountaineering guide around Bariloche would have been useful, but I think it didn't existed at that time, nor does now, to my knowledge....

¡Vamos a esquiar! Si, pero, ¿adónde?
Lets go skiing! Yes, but, where to?

Sobre cumpleaños y números arbitrarios [On birthdays and arbitrary numbers]

The past weekend it was my 34th birthday. I must confess that the day of my birthday it's NOT really my favorite day of the year, it's like I think that people may be expecting something from me, more precisely to do something, like blow the candles on that sweet cake, which, by the way, I have no idea where that tradition comes from, nor what it means, nor what's the meaning of the candles, nor why it's sweet, nor why three wishes, nor why this song, and that kind of stuff... And I like to know why, or at least ask about it...
Anyhow, let's continue with the tradition, and let me blow up the candles:

Well, rather off topic, but I really like The Simpsons...

So let's go with the second one, the history behind the picture, this time with almost no preamble, here's the idea's introduction:

Introduction
The other day I was thinking of posting a picture and tell the story behind it, something like a brainstorm, memories, plans for the future etc, anything it may came out in the process of writing it. So lets see what happens with the first try.
But wait, is not this the idea of "Instagram"? May be, but I don't have an account, nor a smart phone, so let's take it as an inspiration, oh, that thin line between homage and plagiarism, but wait, lets don't lose the thread, we where whit the photo:

This past winter was rather short and hot here in Bariloche: Snow started falling about mid of July, by mid of October the temperatures where rather hot, and the snow coverage was similar (even less) than in mid of November the previous year. By the way, in 2015 we were skiing at beginning of June... All this meant than in 2016 we have something like three months of skiing, when the previous year it were about five months.
Anyway, this season I was lucky enough to go to some volcanoes I was hopping to ski: Lonquimay, Llaima, Lanín and Tronador. So, time for an update on skiing the volcanoes.

Ski Frey

Refugio Frey is probably the most famous hut near Bariloche, Argentina. It's situated in Catedral hills, near Cerro Catedral ski center. The granite "agujas"  near the hut had become an international climbing destination, here is the online climbing guide, from Rolando's Garibotti page. The place is really beautiful, and in winter, there is a lot of terrain to go skiing.

Tu vida en fotos [Your life in pictures]

Me gusta sacar fotos.

I like to take pictures. I think I started shooting when I was about 10 years old, I should check for a more precise date. Pictures tend to pile up, moreover after the arrival of digital cameras, where you don't have a 24 or 36 pictures limit. Some time ago I started using flickr as a kind of back up of my pictures, and also as a way of watching them, moreover since the advent of digital cameras, where we generally don't mind taking an immense amount of pictures, just to end there sitting in a hard disk or memory card (that, if we are lucky, it won't fail - just in case, you may want to have at least one back up, preferably two).
After selecting and uploading something like half a decade of pictures, I was browsing flickr through the "camera roll" page, where pictures are organized by the date you took them. There I realized that it would be a good idea to choose one picture per month, because even I was careful to make some selection (and not upload ALL my pictures), there where a lot of pictures. I though that in this way  (selecting twelve pictures per year) I would remember in a glance what was going on in that particular year, something like a "calendar", but from the past years.
The initial idea was to choose one picture per month from all the pictures taken that month, but sometimes this would not happen, because I didn't took pictures that month, or because I don't like any one. So, in that case, I may select a picture from some other month, preferably close to the month which is lacking.
So well, here is my first calendar try, for the past year (2015). The original flickr album here. I haven't found yet in flick a place to write something like a blog, sure there is some way, but I'm more used to blogger, so here are the pictures with some brief explanation.

La paradoja del tiempo libre [The free time paradox]

The thing whit free time is more or less like this, in my opinion: You always think that you don't have enough free time to do whatever you like to do, so you are anxiously waiting the weekend / vacations / end of semester to arrive so you can do all that things you are postponing, because you don't have the time. Then, when the free time arrives, you end up doing about a 10% of the things you where planing to do, because you have "plenty of time", so never mind trying to use that time efficiently.
Summarizing, the more free time you have, the most time you waste, at least that seems to happen to me.

Sometimes I forgot how much I enjoy walking and running through the mountain. This summer I've been rock climbing a lot (more on than in a post I'm trying to write), so not too much time left for trail walking/running. But autumn is here, daylight is shrinking, not too much time to climb after work, so time to go running (don't forget your headlamp, again...).
A couple of weeks ago I went for a run to Cerro Otto, after about an hour of walking and running I thought "this is really good, I should do it more often". Then I looked back in my training log and saw that I'd run about one hour in the last nine month (spread in three different days), maybe that was why I was missing the feeling. So I'll better write it down before I forget it again.

Esquiando los volcanes [Skiing the volcanos]

Hopping to get some skiing in Puntiagudo volcano, with Martín and Pájaro

I've always likes skiing, since I first step on a pair of skis more than 20 years ago. But I used to live in the flat lands, so my skiing world was limited to the in bound area of Las Leñas (in Mendoza) and Cerro Bayo (in Villa La Angostura, Neuquén). Sometimes in Las Leñas I saw the "warning" signs at the beginning of some out of bounds run, I even took some of them, but nothing really far away from the pistes.
Then I moved to Bariloche (in 2010) and I read an article of Sebastián de La Cruz  who skied from the top of Mount Tronador, which in fact is a volcano. At that time, it seemed really far away for me just to step on top of Tronador highest peak, I didn't had the equipment, training nor (most important) the skills to get up there, never mind skiing down a 45 degree slope.
But this article sparked my imagination, showing that things that look impossible aren't so. This doesn't mean than anyone could go and ski Tronador, it's Sebastian de la Cruz here who is talking...
Nevertheless, the idea of skiing from atop of volcanos stayed in my mind. During the following ski seasons, after arriving to Bariloche, I learned about ski mountaineering, ice climbing and glacier travel. I also started to go out to the mountains more often, since they where closer.
Finally this past winter (2015) I had the privilege to ski some volcanos I had been watching since some years ago, namely Lanín and Osorno. I also skied Casablanca volcano (all of them from the top) and most part of Puntiagudo. There are a lot of volcanos near Bariloche, so the list is almost endless, I've picked some of them, including some ones I've skied and some others I'm hopping to do so: Lanín, Osorno, Casablanca / Antillanca group, Tronador, Puntiagudo, Puyehue, Villarrica, Mocho / Choshuenco, Llaima and Lonquimay.

In the beginning
The idea of this trip has been turning around in my mind since some years ago, when my friend Martín told me about his journeys in the Cordillera Blanca of Perú. In the previous years, for different reasons, I couldn't join Martín, but this time I couldn't say no. So at the beginning of July we were traveling to Lima, from Buenos Aires, just in the middle of the final game of the "Copa American" football coup, between Argentina and Chile (I'm not a football fanatic, as you can guess...)

Comiendo en movimiento [Eating on the move]

After some time doing aerobic exercise (running, cycling, walking, or whatever sport that spans more than, say, one hour) one starts to feel hungry and thirsty. And here the question arise: what to eat and drink? and when? before the exercise? during? after? how much? what type of food? etc, etc.
Well, there's a lot written about that, and everyone should try for itself what works better for his body, but after reading and experimenting with myself I've found the following system which works for me:

Raisins in its bottle, the cord is to hang it from a harness.
250 gr of pure sweetness (about 750 kcal). Apples for scale

Buscando algo de nieve [Searching for some snow]

It seems that winter is coming, some snow has fall down here at the end of May and beginning of June, not too much, but better than nothing... The idea is to get some skiing before July, because I'll be travelling to Perú for four weeks, so I think I'll be missing a bit the skiing...
The weather this year has a similar behavior than last year: some snow storms followed by a rise in temperature, so we tend to have a thin snowpack with spring snow conditions in late autumn.
At end of May a storm left some snow, we couldn't resist the temptation to get a look at the snow slopes up in cerro Tronador, near Meiling hut. This is the highest peak around Bariloche. The snowpack was thin but we managed to get some turns, and some ice climbing in the crevasses.

¿Habrá algo de nieve che?
Would there be some snow?
Well, its end of May, what did you expected? Anyway, the view is amazing

Caminando por las Cinco lagunas [Walking through the Five Lagoons]

The past Sunday I went out walking with Martín through the Cinco Lagunas (five lagoons) trek, a circuit I wanted to do since I moved to Bariloche in 2010. The trail starts at Colonia Suiza, Bariloche, and ends up in Pampa Linda, at the base of mount Tronador. During the trek, you pass by five lagoons: Laguna Negra, laguna CAB, laguna Cretón, laguna Jujuy and laguna Ilón. Normally, people do the trek in three or four days, camping near the lagoons, taking advantage of the summer hot days to take a bath and so on.

Invierno 2014 [Winter 2014]

Well, the idea was to make some blog post during the winter about skiing around Bariloche, but (as usual) I didn't have the time. So I thought about putting it all together in one post, something like a summary of this past winter.

Cruzando a Chile en bicicleta [Pedaling to Chile and back]

After my first successful bike trip in January 2011, I was eager to go for more. It still was summer, the days had a lot of sun hours and it wasn't too cold. So I started looking at the map to plan my next trip.
I still had the idea to go to Chile and back, based on a chat I had with a friend some years ago. So this time the idea was to start at San Martín de los Andes, go north towards Carirriñe pass, cross to Chile, then travel south towards Pirihueico lake, cross the border again through Huahum pass, and finally continue to the east to get back to San Martín de los Andes.
The carnival holidays where coming, so I had four days to complete the trip. Looking to the map, the whole trip was about 210 km and 4000 m of climb. It looked interesting...
