Buscando algo de nieve [Searching for some snow]

Parece que el invierno está llegando, cayó algo de nieve a fin de mayo y principio de junio, no demasiado, pero mejor que nada... La idea es esquiar un poco antes de julio, porque me voy de viaje a Perú por cuatro semanas, y creo que voy a extrañar un poco el esquí...

Este año el clima viene parecido al invierno pasado: caen algunas nevadas seguidas por un aumento de la temperatura, así que el manto de nieve está bastante fino, y tenemos nieve primavera a fin del otoño.

A fin de mayo cayó una nevada, y no pudimos resistir la tentación de ir a ver cuánta nieve había en el cerro Tronador, cerca del refugio Meiling. Este es el pico más alto de la zona de Bariloche. El manto de nieve era fino pero igual pudimos hacer algunas bajadas, y un poco de escalada en hielo en las grietas del glaciar.

It seems that winter is coming, some snow has fall down here at the end of May and beginning of June, not too much, but better than nothing... The idea is to get some skiing before July, because I'll be travelling to Perú for four weeks, so I think I'll be missing a bit the skiing...

The weather this year has a similar behavior than last year: some snow storms followed by a rise in temperature, so we tend to have a thin snowpack with spring snow conditions in late autumn.

At end of May a storm left some snow, we couldn't resist the temptation to get a look at the snow slopes up in cerro Tronador, near Meiling hut. This is the highest peak around Bariloche. The snowpack was thin but we managed to get some turns, and some ice climbing in the crevasses.

La semana siguiente fui a dar una vuelta por Lopez, a ver si encontraba algo de nieve, había algo de acumulación arriba de 1600 m, pero la visibilidad era bastante poca, así que tuve que esperar hasta el fin de semana siguiente. Arriba nevaba, pero la mayoría de la bajada estuvo lloviendo, no recuerdo haberme mojado tanto últimamente.

Para mitad de junio, la nieve se empezaba a acumular un poco, así que fuimos a esquiar un par de veces al cerro Catedral, tratando de esquivar la mayor cantidad de piedras posibles.

Unas semanas después, volví al cerro Lopez, con unos amigos, a esquiar un poco para el lado del filo de la Cabras. Más nieve no estaría mal, pero después de todo fue un muy buen día de esquí.

Para fin de junio, no estaba nevando mucho, y las temperaturas no eran exactamente frías, así que el manto de nieve estaba cada vez más fino. Antes de irme a Perú, fui a El Paso con unos amigos, había que esforzarse para encontrar un camino de nieve entre las piedras y así evitar sacarse los esquíes, pero el paisaje realmente vale la pena.

Bueno, esperemos que nieve un poco en julio así hay más días de esquí esta temporada! Mientras tanto, me voy a caminar y escalar un poco por la Cordillera Blanca.

The next weekend I went to take a look at the snow in cerro Lopez, there was some snow accumulation above 1600 m, but the visibility was really low, so I had to wait until the next weekend. Up there was snowing, but most of the descent was raining, so I got really soaked up.

By mid June the snowpak was getting not so thin, so we went a couple of times to cerro Catedral and make some turns, trying to avoid as much rocks as possible.

Some weeks later I returned to cerro Lopez also, with a couple of friends, and get some climbs and descents towards the filo de las Cabras. There could be more snow, but it was a good skiing day after all.

By end of June, we were lacking some precipitation, and the temperatures weren't exactly cold, so the snow pack was getting even thinner. Before leaving to Perú, I went to El Paso with a couple of friends, it was a tough job to find a path through the snow in order no to take off your skis, but the scenery is really worthy.

Well, let's hope for some snow in July and more skiing days this season! In the mean time, I'm going trekking and climbing in the Cordillera Blanca.
