Ski Frey

El refugio Frey es uno de los más famosos de Bariloche, Argentina. Está situado en las laderas del cerro Catedral, cerca del centro de esquí. Sus agujas de granito cerca del refugio se han convertido en un destino de escalada internacional, acá está la guía online de escalada, la página de Rolando Garibotti. El lugar es realmente hermoso, y en invierno hay un montón de laderas para esquiar.

Refugio Frey is probably the most famous hut near Bariloche, Argentina. It's situated in Catedral hills, near Cerro Catedral ski center. The granite "agujas"  near the hut had become an international climbing destination, here is the online climbing guide, from Rolando's Garibotti page. The place is really beautiful, and in winter, there is a lot of terrain to go skiing.

Subí por primera vez a Frey en diciembre de 2010, estaba todo cubierto de nieve después de una nevada un tanto inusual, un par de días antes (acá es casi verano en esa fecha...).Después volví varias veces, en salidas de trekking y escalada, pero recién hace un par de años fui por primera vez a esquiar, en 2014. Las posibilidades de esquiar son realmente muchas, hay muchas laderas con distintas orientaciones para elegir, desde pendientes suaves y moderadas hasta canaletas empinadas y angostas.

Los valles cercanos también están llenos de buenas líneas. Una vez, volviendo de El Bolsón, por la ruta, vi la cara sur de la cumbre Sur del Catedral, esta es una pala bastante grande, orientación sur, con un desnivel de unos 800 m, en ese momento anoté esa cara en la lista de "cosas para hacer"...

El invierno pasado fui a Frey con mi amigo Martín, esperando poder esquiar un poco antes que se termine este invierno caluroso. Era fin de septiembre, nieve primavera por todos lados, sin precipitaciones pronosticadas, y un poco caluroso el asunto para mi gusto, pero bueno, algo de nieve es mejor que nada, ¿no?. Yo había estado un par de veces en Frey, hacía un par de años, pero nunca pude esquiar más de una bajada, antes de tener que pegar la vuelta a Bariloche, así que esta vez el plan era quedarnos unas tres noches en el refugio, con lo cual teníamos dos días completos para esquiar en la zona de Frey, un día para llegar hasta ahí y otro día para volver a Bariloche.

El primer día me encontré con Martín en Catedral, a unos 2000 m.s.m., yo subí foquenado mientras el subía por la silla, cargando la mayoría de la comida. De ahí traveseamos a la izquierda, hacia la lagunita, y buscamos la pasada al valle del Van Titter. Las caras norte estaban muy "primaverosas", mientras que las caras sur tenían nieve bastante dura, para compensar, supongo :P

Después de una bajada estilo "mejor no caerse", cruzamos el arroyo Van Titter, caminamos un poco, lengueamos otro poco, y finalmente llegamos al refugio Frey a eso de las dos de la tarde. No era demasiado tarde, así que alivianamos las mochilas y salimos a esquiar otro rato. Subimos una canaleta bastante ancha entre la aguja Vecinal y las Tres Marías, que luego esquiamos, y para terminar fuimos por otra bajada más desde la Piedra Inclinada, arriba de la laguna Schmoll.

El siguiente día, era nuestro primer día entero en Frey, así que planeamos hacer un intento a la cara sur del Catedral Sur. Todo indicaba que iba a ser un día largo: Había que llegar a la cumbre del Catedral Sur, esquiar la cara sur, después volver a subirla, esquiar la cara norte por el valle del Campanile, y para terminar, una última subida al col entre el valle del Campanile y Frey, el col Parótidas. Finalmente, fue un día largo nomás: La subida estuvo bastante bien, hasta los últimos metros donde tuvimos que caminar, porque la nieve en la cara norte estaba muy blanda; de ahí la bajada por la cara sur que estaba bastante dura, no tan disfrutable, y no te olvides que hay que volver a subir... Esa subida fue muy cansadora, mentalmente, por lo menos para mi, que no había traído cuchillas, así que cada conversión era un desafío a la concentración... En un momento pensé "mejor que no me caiga, porque no pienso subir esta ladera de vuelta!"

Después de la última gran subida del día, esquiamos la cara norte, con bastante buena nieve primavera, y muy buenas vistas de las agujas del valle del Campanile. Subimos el col Parótidas y volvimos al refugio, se sentía el cansancio de un día largo, que era esperable, pero yo estaba mentalmente exhausto, esa foqueada por la cara sur no fue gratis...

El tercer día, nos juntamos con los chicos del refugio (Martín y el Pana) y salimos hacia el valle que está atrás de la aguja Principal, entre Catedral y el filo del Claussen. Había unas cuantas líneas recomendadas por ahí, ¡gracias Ian!

Volvimos a subir por la derecha de la aguja Vecinal, donde habíamos esquiado el primer día, de ahí traveseamos a la izquierda arriba de unos manchones de nieve bastante dura (no vale caerse, de vuelta...), para llegar al valle que estábamos buscando. De ahí, esquiamos un poco hasta el valle y luego subimos a la derecha, hacia el filo del Claussen. Después de un poco de charla, descanso y comida en el filo, esquiamos la cara este con muy buena nieve primavera, mucho mejor la bajada que en las caras sur, duras como hielo!.

Para terminar el día, con Martín queríamos esquiar la cara este de la aguja Principal, mientras que los chicos tenían que volver al refugio a trabajar, así que subimos al col entre la aguja Principal y la Lechuza, de ahí traveseamos a la derecha (con un poco de escalada en roca incluida) y esquiamos la cara este, terminando cerca de la Tapia. De vuelta a subir el col Parótidas y vuelta al refugio, para un poco más de comida y sueño (por favor!)

En nuestro cuarto y último día, el objetivo era volver a Bariloche. Hay varios caminos para volver, queríamos uno que tuviera la mayor cantidad de esquí y la menor cantidad de caminata... Así que subimos de vuelta hasta la Piedra Inclinada, arriba de la laguna Schmoll, y esquiamos hasta el fondo del valle del Van Titter. Desde el fondo del valle, foqueamos la cara sur para salir arriba de La Hoyita, en el centro de esquí Catedral. Este último día se sintió muy duro, como si hubiéramos hecho el mismo desnivel que el segundo día, pero resulta que fue más o menos la mitad (1550 m contra 750 m)... Es interesante notar como el cansancio (o el nivel de entrenamiento, para el caso) afecta la percepción del esfuerzo, la distancia, y la dificultad.

Finalmente, pudimos hacer muchas buenas bajadas por Frey, rodeados de unos paisajes soñados, la nieve no fue la mejor, pero fue la mejor que conseguimos! Ahora es tiempo de esperar a la temporada que viene, y seguir mirando el mapa y las fotos en busca de muchas más líneas en Frey. Nos vemos ahí el año que viene!

My first time in Frey was at the end of December 2010, all the place was covered in snow from the previous days unlikely storm (that date is almost summer here...).

Then I went back several times, during trekking and climbing outings, but it wasn't until 2014 that I first went there for skiing. The skiing terrain near  Frey hut is really big, there are a lot aspects and lines to choose, from low angle and moderate slopes to steep and tight chutes.

The nearby valleys are also full of good lines. One time, when traveling back from El Bolsón, I saw the south face of Catedral south summit, this is like a big south facing bowl, a descent of about 800 m, in that moment that slope entered my "wish list"...

The past winter, I went to Frey whit my friend Martin, hopping to get some skiing before this hot winter ended. It was end of September, the snow pack in full spring conditions, no precipitations forecasted, and rather too hot in my view, but any snow is better than no one, isn't it?. I've been in Frey some days, a couple of years before, but I never managed to ski more than one descent, before needing to get back to Bariloche, so this time we planed for three nights at the hut, with two full days of skiing near Frey, one day to get in and another one to get out.

The first day, I met with Martín in Catedral ski slopes, at about 2000 m.a.s.l, I skinned up while he used the chairlifts, carrying most of the food. From there, we traverse to "la lagunita" and seek for a pass to the Van Titter valley. The north facing slopes where really "springy",  and the south faces where almost ice hard, just to balance, I suppose :P

After a "better not to fall" descent, we cross the Van Titter river and walked up a little bit, bushwhacked some more, and finally arrived to Refugio Frey about 2 pm. It wasn't too late, so we lightened our packs and went for some more skiing. We skinned up a chute between aguja Vecinal and Tres Marías, ski down, and then went for one last ski descent from atop Schmoll lagoon, near the Piedra Inclinada.

The next day, it was our first full day of skiing in Frey, so we agreed to give it a try to the south face of Catedral sur. It looked like a long day, since first we have to get to Catedral Sur's summit, ski down the south face, then skin it back, ski the north face through the Campanile's valley, and finally skin up again a small call between Campanile's and Frey's valley (col Parótidas). In the end, it certainly was a long day: The way up was more or less good, until the last part of the climb, were the snow in the north face was too loose to skin, so we switched to walking; then, the descent in the south face was rather hard snow, not so enjoyable, and don't forget that we have to climb it up again... That climb was mentally exhausting, at lest for me, who have not brought ski crampons, so every turn was a concentration challenge... At one time I thought "I'll better don't slip, because I don't want to climb this slope again!"

After the last big climb of the day, the way down was quite good, in decent spring snow, with really good views of Campanile's valley. We skinned up again the Parotidas col and made it back to the hut, I was feeling the tiredness of a long skiing day, which was expectable, but I was mentally exhausted, that south face skinning wasn't free...

The third day, we teamed up with the boys from the hut (Martín and Pana) and headed toward the valley beneath Aguja Principal, between Catedral and Claussen hills. There were some good lines recommendations there, thanks Ian!

We went up again near aguja Vecinal, the same chute we skied our first day, then traversed left over some hard snow (don't fall! again...), in order to get to our targeted valley. From there, we skied down and then skinned to the right, to get to the Claussen ridge. After some chatting, resting and eating at the top, we skied this east facing slope in spring snow, much better skiing than in the ice-hard south faces!

To end up the day, Martín and I wanted to ski the east face of aguja Principal, while the boys needed to got back to work at the hut, so we climbed up to the Principal - La Lechuza col, then traverse to the right (with some rock climbing included) and skied down the east face, ending up near La Tapia. We skinned up (again) Parotida's col and returned to the hut, fore some more refueling and sleeping (please!)

In our fourth day, the objective was to get back to Bariloche. There are some ways to do that, we wanted the one with more skiing and less walking as possible... So, we went up again to the Piedra Inclinada, above Schmoll lagoon, and ski down to the top of Van Titter's valley. From the bottom of the valley, we skinned the south face and topped out near La Hoyita, in Catedral ski center. This last day felt really hard, as if we have made the same elevation gain than in our second day, but it turned out it was about the half (1550 m vs 750 m)... It's interesting to note how the perception of the effort, distance traveled, and overall difficulty is affected by your tiredness level (or training level, for that matter)...

In the end, we managed to get some good skiing inside a dreamed landscape, the snow wasn't the best one, but was the best we could get! Now is time to wait for next seasons, and continue looking the map and pictures for a lot more lines at Frey. See you next year!
