Creo que ya les conté alguna vez que soy un poco fanático del esquí, desde aquella primera vez que mi padre me llevara a Las Leñas, Mendoza, hace unos 25 años, más o menos. Cuestión que muy lindo el centro de esquí, pero cuando descubrí esto del esquí de travesía, donde ahora no estás limitado a las pistas y sus alrededores, sino que podés esquiar donde te parezca, ahí sí que me hice fanático del todo, sobre todo porque también disfruto mucho de la parte de subir, y no solo de la bajada...
Así que cuando me vine a vivir a Bariloche, hice un par de cursos para aprender las cosas básicas de esquí de travesía y avalanchas, y ahora solamente quedaba salir a esquiar. Pero bueno, no es tan fácil, porque tenés que conseguirte algunos compañeros, y después hay que ver adónde vamos a esquiar. Y esta es la parte que no terminaba de entender al principio: ¿por dónde arrancamos? Una guía de esquí de travesía por la zona de Bariloche no habría estado mal, pero bueno, no existía en ese momento, y creo que sigue sin existir...

I think I've already told you that I really like skiing, since that first time I went to Las Leñas, Mendoza, with my father, something like 25 years ago. The ski center is very nice, but when I discovered ski mountaineering, where you are no longer limited to the ski pistes, you can ski wherever you want, I think at that point I became a ski fanatic, mainly because I also enjoy the way up, as much as the down.
So when I moved to Bariloche, I made a couple of courses to learn the basics about ski mountaineering and avalanches, and now it's just time to go out skiing. But well, it's not so easy, you need to find some partners, and then, where do we go skiing? And that was the part I couldn't yet understand: where we may start? A ski mountaineering guide around Bariloche would have been useful, but I think it didn't existed at that time, nor does now, to my knowledge....

El fin de semana pasado cumplí 34 años. Debo confesar que el día de mi cumpleaños NO es mi día del año favorito, ni mucho menos, es como si la gente estuviera esperando algo de mi, que hiciera algo, como por ejemplo soplar las velas sobre esa torta tan dulce, que, dicho sea de paso, no tengo la menor idea de dónde viene esa tradición, ni que significa, ni por qué esto de soplar las velas, ni por qué es dulce y no salada, ni por qué tres deseos, ni por qué esta canción, y ese tipo de cosas... Y me gusta saber por qué, o al menos preguntarme...

De todas maneras, continuemos con la tradición soplando esas velas:

The past weekend it was my 34th birthday. I must confess that the day of my birthday it's NOT really my favorite day of the year, it's like I think that people may be expecting something from me, more precisely to do something, like blow the candles on that sweet cake, which, by the way, I have no idea where that tradition comes from, nor what it means, nor what's the meaning of the candles, nor why it's sweet, nor why three wishes, nor why this song, and that kind of stuff... And I like to know why, or at least ask about it...

Anyhow, let's continue with the tradition, and let me blow up the candles:

Introducción

El otro día se me ocurrió que quizás era buena idea poner una foto y contar un poco la historia que tiene atrás, en una especie de asociación libre de ideas, recuerdos, planes para el futuro, etc, que vayan surgiendo a partir de ahí. Así que vamos con el primer intento a ver qué sale.

Aunque, ahora que lo pienso, ¿esto no sería justamente "Instagram"? Puede ser, pero no tengo una cuenta, ni teléfono inteligente, así que tomemosló como una inspiración, oh, esa delgada línea entre el homenaje y el plagio, pero bueno, no nos vayamos por las ramas, a lo que vinimos, la foto:

The other day I was thinking of posting a picture and tell the story behind it, something like a brainstorm, memories, plans for the future etc, anything it may came out in the process of writing it. So lets see what happens with the first try.

But wait, is not this the idea of "Instagram"? May be, but I don't have an account, nor a smart phone, so let's take it as an inspiration, oh, that thin line between homage and plagiarism, but wait, lets don't lose the thread, we where whit the photo:

Temporada de volcanes 2016 [Volcano season 2016]

El invierno pasado fue un tanto corto y caluroso acá por Bariloche: La nieve empezó a caer a mediados de Julio, para mitad de Octubre las temperaturas estaban bastante altas y la cantidad de nieve era similar a la de mitad de Noviembre del año anterior. En 2015, en cambio, estábamos esquiando a mitad de Junio... Todo esto hizo que en 2016 tuviéramos unos tres meses de esquí, contra unos cinco el año anterior.

Sin embargo, esta temporada tuve la suerte de esquiar algunos volcanes que tenía en la lista: Lonquimay, Llaima, Lanín y Tronador. Así que creo que es  hora de una actualización de "esquiando los volcanes".

This past winter was rather short and hot here in Bariloche: Snow started falling about mid of July, by mid of October the temperatures where rather hot, and the snow coverage was similar (even less) than in mid of November the previous year. By the way, in 2015 we were skiing at beginning of June... All this meant than in 2016 we have something like three months of skiing, when the previous year it were about five months.

Anyway, this season I was lucky enough to go to some volcanoes I was hopping to ski: Lonquimay, Llaima, Lanín and Tronador. So, time for an update on skiing the volcanoes.

Ski Frey

El refugio Frey es uno de los más famosos de Bariloche, Argentina. Está situado en las laderas del cerro Catedral, cerca del centro de esquí. Sus agujas de granito cerca del refugio se han convertido en un destino de escalada internacional, acá está la guía online de escalada, la página de Rolando Garibotti. El lugar es realmente hermoso, y en invierno hay un montón de laderas para esquiar.

Refugio Frey is probably the most famous hut near Bariloche, Argentina. It's situated in Catedral hills, near Cerro Catedral ski center. The granite "agujas"  near the hut had become an international climbing destination, here is the online climbing guide, from Rolando's Garibotti page. The place is really beautiful, and in winter, there is a lot of terrain to go skiing.

Tu vida en fotos [Your life in pictures]

Me gusta sacar fotos. Creo que empecé a sacar fotos alrededor de los diez años, en realidad tendría que revisar un poco para tener una fecha más precisa. Las fotos tienden a apilares, sobre todo desde que aparecieron las cámaras digitales donde ya no tenés un límite de 24 o 36 fotos.
Desde hace algún tiempo, estoy usando flickr como una especie de back up para mis fotos, y también una forma de mirarlas y seleccionarlas, porque por lo general la pila de fotos queda guardada en el fondo de algún disco rígido o tarjeta de memoria (que, si tenemos suerte, no se va a romper... por las dudas habría que tener al menos un back up de las fotos, si son dos, mejor).
Después de subir algo así como media década de fotos, estaba navegando por el "rollo de fotos" (camera roll) de flickr, donde las fotos están organizadas por la fecha en que fueron tomadas. Ahí se me ocurrió que quizás era buena idea elegir una foto por mes, porque por más que hice una selección de fotos (y no subí TODAS), igual eran muchas fotos. Se me ocurrió que de esta forma (eligiendo una foto por mes) sería más fácil recordar qué pasó en ese año en particular, algo así como un "calendario", pero del año que ya pasó.
La idea inicial era elegir una foto por mes, dentro de todas las fotos tomadas ese mes, pero en algunos meses esto se puede complicar, porque no saqué ninguna foto, o porque no me gusta ninguna. En ese caso, la idea sería elegir una foto que no fuera de ese mes, preferentemente de los meses cercanos.
Así que, bueno, acá esta mi primer intento de calendario, del año pasado (2015). El álbum original de flickr está por acá. Todavía no encontré en flickr algo parecido a un blog, donde uno pueda escribir, seguro que esta por ahí, pero estoy más acostumbrado al formato de blogger, así que acá van las fotos con una breve descripción.


I like to take pictures. I think I started shooting when I was about 10 years old, I should check for a more precise date. Pictures tend to pile up, moreover after the arrival of digital cameras, where you don't have a 24 or 36 pictures limit. Some time ago I started using flickr as a kind of back up of my pictures, and also as a way of watching them, moreover since the advent of digital cameras, where we generally don't mind taking an immense amount of pictures, just to end there sitting in a hard disk or memory card (that, if we are lucky, it won't fail - just in case, you may want to have at least one back up, preferably two).

After selecting and uploading something like half a decade of pictures, I was browsing flickr through the "camera roll" page, where pictures are organized by the date you took them. There I realized that it would be a good idea to choose one picture per month, because even I was careful to make some selection (and not upload ALL my pictures), there where a lot of pictures. I though that in this way  (selecting twelve pictures per year) I would remember in a glance what was going on in that particular year, something like a "calendar", but from the past years.

The initial idea was to choose one picture per month from all the pictures taken that month, but sometimes this would not happen, because I didn't took pictures that month, or because I don't like any one. So, in that case, I may select a picture from some other month, preferably close to the month which is lacking.

So well, here is my first calendar try, for the past year (2015). The original flickr album here. I haven't found yet in flick a place to write something like a blog, sure there is some way, but I'm more used to blogger, so here are the pictures with some brief explanation.
